Hello Ros,

It is great to see so much activity to improve the safety of Beechmont Road and all the locals are very supportive of the works. However, there is a bit of frustration building around the waiting interval on the traffic lights, especially the one that is between Tarlington and Mirani Streets. As you know this one has been there since cyclone Debbie. The waiting interval used to be much shorter which did not lead to frustration and as far as we know there were no accidents or incidents. The waiting interval has recently been extended and is way too long. After it goes from green to red everyone waits for an extended period. Could we ask you to ask TMR for a shorter waiting time on this set of lights.

    Dear Ros

Thank you for enquiry on behalf of your constituent Craig Perkins about the landslip repair works currently occurring on Beechmont Road.

We appreciate the support of the local community while these important repairs are made and note there are various points at our work sites along Beechmont Road where motorists are currently experiencing delays due to traffic control in place. Our number one priority is safety, particularly given the windy, narrow conditions along Beechmont Road. The project is making every effort to maintain access for motorists’ while works occur on multiple sites simultaneously to ensure these 23 landslips are repaired in the shortest possible timeframe.

The traffic signals Mr Perkins is referring to near Mirani Street are located at the project’s largest landslip site. The works required to repair this landslip are significant and after discussion with our contractor, Georgiou, we have been advised these traffic signals are currently on the shortest reasonable time. A large piling rig is due to be delivered to that site this coming Monday night (between midnight and 4am) and preparation is currently underway for arrival of that machine. Once the machine is assembled and operational, daytime works will occur to install piles to stabilise this landslip. These works are expected to continue for the next few months with traffic signals in place directing motorists one way at a time. The required length of the wait time is a safety measure due to the nature of the road and the size and complexity of the work site. We will monitor the works and traffic signal waiting time for adjustments where possible to accommodate general traffic.

I trust this information is of assistance in responding to Mr Perkins.

    Yours sincerely
